What’s “good” about “good Friday?”
INTRO: When you really think about it, in many ways we should call “good Friday, BAD Friday!
Maybe you’ve had some bad times in your life, but nothing like Jesus went through during that week.
· He Triumphantly enters Jerusalem, only to find the Temple overrun with animals and crooks!
· He Teaches all week in the Temple, but the “right people” aren’t listening, they are plotting to kill Him.
· His “Last Supper” with the disciples is full of bickering about which of them is “the greatest.”
· He goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray, and God says “NO!!!!”
· His disciples sleep.
· He is sold out by a supposed friend, Judas.
o Someone that Jesus has greatly invested Himself into.
· He is taken into custody by a rabble of soldiers and civilians.
o Even after he heals one of them.
· He is put through a sham of a trial, then sent to Herod.
o While in custody, he is slapped around, made fun of and generally mistreated.
· He is turned over to Pilate, who has the backbone of a nightcrawler.
o He is beaten, nearly to death, with a whip.
o He is mocked.
o He has a crown of thorns shoved down on His head.
o Then He begins carrying His own cross.
· Finally, He is nailed naked, to a cross to die.
IT’S BEEN A ROUGH WEEK!!!
(I) What was bad?
a. The suffering of Jesus.
i. The beating that Jesus took killed most men who were subjected to it.
ii. Crucifixion was the worst way the Romans could come up with to kill someone.
1. It was meant to be utterly painful.
2. It was meant to bring maximum shame and sorrow to the one being crucified, and those who loved them.
B. Cruel and unusual? Absolutely!
iii. The intentions and actions of evil men.
1. Men who had no reason to hate Jesus, hated Him anyway.
B. They finally got their way.
iv. The brokenness of, and the betrayal by ALL the disciples,
1. Judas “sells out” literally.
2. Peter talks a great game, but runs away in the end.
B. He then curses and says “I don’t know Him! When he is confronted.
C. The rest of the disciples run too!
b. The death of Jesus.
i. He took all our sin upon Himself!
II Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
1. He was separated from the Father and the Holy Spirit by that sin!
ii. He dies an agonizing death, while His mother looks on.
So, What was good?
Not much.
But what happened that night and the following day, led to the Resurrection and our salvation!
(II) What about tonight is bad for us?
a. Thoughts of having needed the sacrifice that Jesus made.
i. This should pain us!
ii. Our sin caused His suffering!
1. As bad as that is, it is what He planned to do from the very beginning!
B. He chose to do this for you and me!
So, what sin are we carrying around that we wish was off our back?
· Maybe a bad attitude about someone else.
· Perhaps it’s lust.
· Maybe it’s uncontrolled anger.
· Perhaps I don’t have control of my tongue the way I should?
· It might be a sin that’s affecting your home life.
· It could be a sin that’s causing your work to suffer?
· We could continue to list possibilities until this time tomorrow night, but instead, it’s time to talk to God about getting rid of that sin, whatever it is.
What about tonight is good for us?
Thinking about the sacrifice Jesus made.
Think about the ways we betray Christ!
Being able to make a decision to get rid of the weights of guilt we are carrying.
How do I do that?
Spend some time in prayer.
Write down what you need to do something about.
Toss it in the fire.
Pray some more.
