Good Friday Service

THIS IS OUR GOD

REMEMBER THOSE WALLS THAT WE CALLED SIN AND SHAME

THEY WERE LIKE PRISONS THAT WE COULDN’T ESCAPE

BUT HE CAME, AND HE DIED, AND HE ROSE

THOSE WALLS ARE RUBBLE NOW

REMEMBER THOSE GIANTS WE CALLED DEATH AND GRAVE

THEY WERE LIKE MOUNTAINS THAT STOOD IN OUR WAY

BUT HE CAME, AND HE DIED, AND HE ROSE

THOSE GIANTS ARE DEAD NOW

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHO HE IS, HE LOVES US

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHAT HE DOES, HE SAVES US

HE BORE THE CROSS, BEAT THE GRAVE

LET HEAVEN AND EARTH PROCLAIM, THIS IS OUR GOD, KING JESUS

REMEMBER THAT FEAR THAT TOOK OUR BREATH AWAY

FAITH SO WEAK THAT WE COULD BARELY PRAY

BUT HE HEARD EVERY WORD EVERY WHISPER

NOW THOSE ALTARS IN THE WILDERNESS

TELL THE STORY OF HIS FAITHFULNESS

NEVER ONCE DID HE FAIL, AND HE NEVER WILL

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHO HE IS, HE LOVES US

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHAT HE DOES, HE SAVES US

HE BORE THE CROSS, BEAT THE GRAVE

LET HEAVEN AND EARTH PROCLAIM, THIS IS OUR GOD, KING JESUS

WHO PULLED ME OUT OF THAT PIT? HE DID HE DID!

WHO PAID FOR ALL OF OUR SIN? NOBODY BUT JESUS!

WHO PULLED ME OUT OF THAT PIT? HE DID HE DID!

WHO PAID FOR ALL OF OUR SIN? NOBODY BUT JESUS!

WHO RESCUED ME FROM THAT GRAVE? YAHWEH, YAHWEH!

WHO GETS THE GLORY AND PRAISE? NOBODY BUT JESUS!

WHO RESCUED ME FROM THAT GRAVE? YAHWEH, YAHWEH!

WHO GETS THE GLORY AND PRAISE? NOBODY BUT HIM!

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHOHE IS, HE LOVES US

THIS IS OUR GOD, THIS IS WHAT HE DOES, HE SAVES US

HE BORE THE CROSS, BEAT THE GRAVE

LET HEAVEN AND EARTH PROCLAIM, THIS IS OUR GOD, KING JESUS

HE BORE THE CROSS, BEAT THE GRAVE

LET HEAVEN AND EARTH PROCLAIM. THIS IS OUR GOD, KING JESUS

HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US

HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US

HOW VAST BEYOND ALL MEASURE

THAT HE SHOULD GIVE HIS ONLY SON

TO MAKE A WRETCH HIS TREASURE

HOW GREAT THE PAIN OF SEARING LOSS

THE FATHER TURNS HIS FACE AWAY

AS WOUNDS WHICH MAR THE CHOSEN ONE

BRING MANY SONS TO GLORY

BEHOLD THE MAN UPON A CROSS

MY SIN UPON HIS SHOULDERS

ASHAMED, I HEAR MY MOCKING VOICE

CALL OUT AMONG THE SCOFFERS

IT WAS MY SIN THAT HELD HIM THERE

UNTIL IT WAS ACCOMPLISHED

HIS DYING BREATH HAS BROUGHT ME LIFE

I KNOW THAT IT IS FINISHED

I WILL NOT BOAST IN ANYTHING

NO GIFTS NO POW’R NO WISDOM

BUT I WILL BOAST IN JESUS CHRIST

HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION

WHY SHOULD I GAIN FROM HIS REWARD

I CANNOT GIVE AN ANSWER

BUT THIS I KNOW WITH ALL MY HEART

HIS WOUNDS HAVE PAID MY RANSOM

HIS MERCY IS MORE

WHAT LOVE COULD REMEMBER NO WRONGS WE HAVE DONE?

OMNISCIENT ALL KNOWING HE COUNTS NOT THEIR SUM

THROWN INTO A SEA WITHOUT BOTTOM OR SHORE

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

PRAISE THE LORD, HIS MERCY IS MORE

STRONGER THAN DARKNESS, NEW EVERY MORN

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

WHAT PATIENCE WOULD WAIT AS WE CONSTANTLY ROAM?

WHAT FATHER SO TENDER IS CALLING US HOME?

HE WELCOMES THE WEAKEST, THE VILEST, THE POOR

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

PRAISE THE LORD, HIS MERCY IS MORE

STRONGER THAN DARKNESS, NEW EVERY MORN

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

WHAT RICHES OF KINDNESS HE LAVISHED ON US?

HIS BLOOD WAS THE PAYMENT, HIS LIFE WAS THE COST

WE STOOD 'NEATH A DEBT WE COULD NEVER AFFORD

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

PRAISE THE LORD, HIS MERCY IS MORE

STRONGER THAN DARKNESS, NEW EVERY MORN

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

PRAISE THE LORD, HIS MERCY IS MORE

STRONGER THAN DARKNESS, NEW EVERY MORN

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

OUR SINS THEY ARE MANY, HIS MERCY IS MORE

CROWN HIM

IT'S NOT MY LIFE TO LIVE, IT'S NOT MY SONG TO SING

ALL I HAVE IS HIS FOR ALL ETERNITY

IT'S NOT MY RIGHTEOUSNESS, IT'S NOT MY FAITHFULNESS

ALL I HAVE IS HIS FOR ALL ETERNITY

WE WILL CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, LORD OF ALL

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL

IT'S NOT MY WAR TO WIN, IT'S NOT MY WEIGHT TO BEAR

BY HIS MIGHTY HAND HE WON THE VICTORY

WE WILL CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, LORD OF ALL

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL

IT'S NOT MY BLOOD BUT HIS, THAT STANDS IN MY DEFENSE

OH, WHAT LOVE IS THIS THAT WON THE VICTORY

WE WILL CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, LORD OF ALL

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL

WE WILL CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, LORD OF ALL

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, KING OF GLORY

CROWN HIM CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL

CROWN HIM, CROWN HIM, LORD OF ALL

Good Friday service

Let’s talk about betrayal….

INTRO: Tonight, we think about Jesus going to the cross for us. It’s a pretty big thing to think about. Someone else; someone perfect, the King of the Universe, died so we can live.

Tonight however, I would like for us to think about the night leading up to this. Technically, Jesus being taken into custody was on Friday anyway… the Jewish people considered the new day beginning when the sun went down.

  1. You can sum up most of Jesus’ evening with a single word: BETRAYAL!
  2. Jesus was betrayed by the disciples’ arguing.
  3. They are fussing like children about who is the most important.
  4. They are so full of their own self-importance that no one will serve anyone.
  5. They are all at the table with dirty feet. Even JESUS!
  6. Jesus is betrayed by Judas.
  7. While he sits at the table with Jesus, Judas has already “sold him out” in his own mind.
  8. Jesus knows this and tells him “what you do, do quickly!”
  9. Judas goes to inform on Jesus to the Chief Priest.
  10. Jesus is betrayed by sleeping Disciples.

Luke 22:45–46 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

  1. Jesus asks His Disciples to do this simple thing… Pray!
  2. But this task apparently is more than they can do.
  3. Jesus is betrayed again, by Judas.
  4. He brings a mob to arrest Jesus.
  5. Matthew and Mark use the Greek word ochlos to describe the great multitude [crowd] of armed men that arrested Jesus. What a contrast to Luke 22:6, which says Judas purposed to avoid an ochlos.
  6. We would probably use the word mob. Villagers with pitchforks and torches coming after Frankenstein’s monster come to mind.
  7. Judas also betrays Jesus with a kiss.
  8. A symbol of affection, loyalty and friendship is used to betray.
  9. Jesus is next betrayed by the entire group of Disciples.
  10. Peter tries to defend Jesus against the mob, a mob that could easily number in the hundreds.
  11. Jesus heals the High Priest’s servant.
  12. The Disciples scatter!
  13. Jesus is betrayed by Peter, individually.
  14. The denials happen, the rooster crows.
  15. Jesus looks at Peter, he runs out “weeping bitterly.”

  1. It’s easy to sit here tonight and think badly about all these who betrayed Jesus.
  2. What they did was most certainly WRONG!
  3. Every one of these things they did that night were terrible! There was no excuse!
  4. But really, are we any better?
  5. We betray Jesus in our lives as well.
  6. Maybe we follow the path of the Disciples, looking at ourselves and better than, and more important than those around us.
  7. Our world is constantly proclaiming the message that “it’s all about me!
  8. It’s all about making ME happy.
  9. It’s all about making ME comfortable.
  10. It’s all about making ME rich.
  11. It’s all about making ME powerful.
  12. It’s all about using whomever I must to reach those goals.
  13. It could be that we would rather sleep than pray.
  14. There are certainly times when we should sleep.
  15. There are even times when it’s right and proper to take a break.
  16. But when it’s time to pray, it’s time to pray!
  17. Or perhaps we have gone Judas’ route…
  18. We have known and followed Jesus, but we have decided to go our own way and betray Him in the process.
  19. “I know what God wants of me, but I choose to do otherwise.”
  20. It could be that our betrayal is that of “going along with the crowd” when difficulty comes our way.
  21. “I don’t want to stand out in the crowd. I’ll just go along to get along! Jesus will surely understand… It’s not that big a deal.”
  22. Or maybe we are like Peter…
  23. We “run hot and cold.”
  24. One minute, we’re ready to swing a sword and hack someone’s head off…
  25. The next, we are afraid to admit the truth when a young servant girl says “He’s one of the followers of Jesus!”
  26. No one knows who we will be when they approach us.
  27. Tonight, we have some slips of paper that we will be passing out. We’ll also give you something to write with.
  28. We are going to spend a few minutes, taking personal evaluation of our lives.
  29. Then, we’re going to write down a way, or ways, in which we betray Jesus.
  30. We are not going to be expected to share what we wrote down.
  31. We’re going to pray about that problem.
  32. Then we are going to throw that problem into the fire as a way of saying “God, with your help, I’m going to burn this betrayal right out of my life.
  33. After a while, we’re going to sing a song and pray, and our time here together will be over.
