SPRING CLEANING!! Why do we call it that? I don’t ever recall hearing another season for cleaning. Is it because the phrase “Spring Cleaning” is catchy? I mean, “Fall Cleaning” sounds a bit dangerous, and painful. “Winter Cleaning” sounds like, well, no fun at all. And “Summer Cleaning”? Really? Especially here in Lake Havasu City.
I did a little research, and I read (and I found this on the Internet, so it must all be true) of many possible origins of the phrase “Spring Cleaning”. It may have come about in the 1800’s because heating homes in the winter time with kerosene, wood, etc., left soot and grime in every room, and Spring was first opportunity to open windows and really clean the home – or possibly from Jewish culture where homes are cleaned before the Passover holidays to remove any yeast bread (or chametz) from the home.
How about you? Have any plans for home “Spring Cleaning”? How about “Spring Cleaning” of your heart and spirit? Spring is also the time of year we, as Christians, to celebrate and honor the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday.
Maybe our spiritual “Spring Cleaning” could involve removing things from our hearts and minds that distract us from Jesus. Maybe our heart “Spring Cleaning” would be to really look at our life choices, and the comments we make (or don’t make) to proclaim the gospel to the rest of the world, and find ways to provide more of the love of Jesus to family, friends, church family, strangers, to the ends of the earth.
One of the greatest things we have to help us with the “Spring Cleaning” of our heart and spirit is worship … Praying more (continually, even), singing praises and hallelujahs to God, studying and applying (not just reading) God’s Word, and writing it on your heart, serving God and others. Make yourself so busy cleaning your hearts and souls and minds and spirit that the world sees us as the bright, shining stars we are called to be.
Here are a few passages that I think are a significant help in your spiritual “Spring Cleaning”:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Psalm 139:23-24
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23
And there are so, so many more. Just look in your bible concordance, or use the search option on your Bible phone app. You won’t be sorry.
I encourage you to encourage me to study these verses, search for more, and continually – NOT just for “Spring Cleaning” – but continually find ways to clean your heart.
✌🏼❤️ - peace and love … Billy
