Are you Battle ready?

Ephesians 6:10–20

“Don’t forget your Brain Bucket!”

INTRO: What do emergency room workers call a motorcyclist who doesn’t wear a helmet? An organ donor.

Motorcycle riders often call a helmet a “brain bucket.” Why? Obviously, it helps to protect your head.

Football players wear helmets. Why? It protects your head, and what’s inside it. (Usually)

Construction workers wear hard hats. Why? To protect their heads from falling debris.

Modern soldiers wear a helmet. Why? To protect their head from injury! (Usually)

As a Christian, “Why do I need a helmet?”

Ephesians 6:10–20 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

11   Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

12   For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13   Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

14   Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

     15   and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;

16   in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17   And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18   With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

19   and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,

20   for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

  1. What is Salvation?
  2. Rescue from sin, death and eternal separation from God.
  3. Rescue from sin:
  4. Sin is turning, in rebellion, away from God.
  5. Adam and Eve sinned, and all humans except Jesus have followed suit.
  6. Rescue from Death:
  7. We still will physically die, but Eternal Death is no longer a problem when we have been saved.
  8. Rescue from being separated from God.
  9. Now!
  10. A Christian has the Holy Spirit living inside.
  11. A Christian doesn’t need a “go between” to go into God’s presence in prayer.
  12. We have Jesus as our High Priest!

Hebrews 4:14–16 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  1. In Eternity
  2. We will enter God’s presence and we will never have to leave!
  3. We will have our Home with Him forever and ever!
  4. Where does Salvation come from?
  5. God, obviously, is the “church answer… But why is this true?
  6. In verse 17, the word “Take” has the idea of receiving or accepting something, instead of grabbing it for yourself.
  7. We don’t deserve it.
  8. We don’t earn it.
  9. We aren’t entitled to it.
  10. If anything, we are certainly not worthy of receiving it.
  11. Our Salvation is a Gift from God, through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ!

2 Peter 1:10–11 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

  1. How does Salvation protect us like a helmet?
  2. In battle with Satanic forces, the Helmet of Salvation protects our head.
  3. Satan is a master at “messing with people’s heads.”
  4. “You’re worthless!”
  5. “Why would God or anyone else want you?”
  6. “You aren’t smart enough…”
  7. “You aren’t brave enough…”
  8. “You aren’t pretty enough…”
  9. “You aren’t rich enough…”
  10. “You just aren’t enough!”
  11. Sometimes, we hear things like this in our own heads, sometimes, Satan puts these words in other people’s mouths.
  12. All of these assessments are totally true! I’m not “enough.” But when I give my life to Christ, who I become?
  13. I am an adopted child of God!

Romans 8:15–17 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

16   The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

17   and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

  1. “Adoption as sons”
  2. In the first century, girls typically didn’t inherit.
  3. Adoption as sons means we are all equally heirs of God!
  4. There are rights!
  5. There are privileges.
  6. God is our “Daddy!” (Abba)
  7. God’s Great Kingdom is yours and mine!
  8. I don’t claim to know exactly what all that means, but it sounds AMAZING!
  9. The Helmet of Salvation reminds us that NOTHING can separate us from God’s Love!

Romans 8:36–39 Just as it is written, “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.” But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1. NOTHING! What a wonderful word!
  2. There is no one, there is no thing, there is no circumstance, there is no problem, that can separate us from God’s love!
  3. The only thing that can separate me from the Love of God is to willingly choose to remove myself from it!
  4. Instead, we OVERWHELMINGLY CONQUER!
  5. Not because I’m smart, strong, fierce, or anything else I can do.
  6. I OVERWHELMINGLY CONQUER because of Jesus!
  7. I’m not “all that!” and neither are you! But Jesus IS “ALL THAT!”
  8. The Helmet of Salvation also reminds us of our future hope!
  9. We’ve already looked at that in part, but let’s look a little deeper.

1 Thessalonians 5:8–11 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

  1. The description here adds a bit. “as a helmet, the hope of salvation.”
  2. Our situation has drastically changed.
  3. From receiving wrath, to obtaining salvation!
  4. Jesus’ death on the cross made this possible!
  5. Dead or alive, we live together with Jesus!
  6. Because of these changes to our situation, we are instructed to encourage each other!
  7. We are in this together!!
  8. If you are a Christian, you are my brother or sister.
