Resurrection Sunday
April 20, 2025
Luke 24:1–9 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? “He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,
7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
INTRO: Welcome to Our “Sonrise” Service here at Havasu Christian Church! We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ EVERY Sunday, but this one day a year is a little “extra special!”
The text we just read is one of the factual accounts in Scripture of the events of that day so long ago.
These women, going to Jesus’ tomb as soon as it was light enough to see, are on their way to do a job that no one would ever want to do. When Jesus body was taken down from the cross, there wasn’t time to properly embalm Jesus’ body before the Sabbath started, so now they are back to finish the job. They don’t even know if they will be able to do it, but they are determined to try!
Instead of a dead body, however, they encounter angels, who ask them “Why do you seek the Living One among the dead?” They continued… “He has RISEN!”
What a change of direction that morning suddenly took!
- They walked to the tomb… They RAN from the tomb to tell the Disciples.
- They came, expecting to see a dead body… Instead, they see angels.
- The Angels terrified them… But their message brought hope!
- Mary Magdalene stood crying her heart out at the tomb, and thought she saw the gardener… Instead, she was the first to see the Risen Lord!
The resurrection changed EVERYTHING!
Jesus is our Savior!
His death on the cross paid the price to bring us back to God!
Without it, we had no chance!
With it, we have eternity!
With that gift comes responsibility!
What does Jesus expect of us?
- Does Jesus expect “Blind obedience?” NO! Jesus expects us to be faithful! (trust)
- Trust in Someone who has proven trustworthy!
Hebrews 11:1-2: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.
- This passage defines faith.
- Assurance has no connection to “blind faith.”
- God, who has never lied and cannot lie because it is not in His nature, can be absolutely trusted to keep His promises!
- Conviction has no connection to “blind faith” either.
- You are convicted or convinced of something by looking at the evidence.
- When we see the evidence of God’s faithfulness, we are convicted that He truly loves us and cares for us!
- As we live our lives in obedience to Him, His faithfulness becomes all the more apparent.
- Does Jesus expect perfection? NO! He expects growth!
- Can we just keep living the same way we always had, but with a “fire insurance policy” from Jesus in our pocket? Absolutely NOT!
An old song talks about this very thing….
“Just my same old walk with Thee.
I’m not changing who I’ll be.
Daily, walking where I please,
Hope that’s cool, dear Lord, cool with Thee.”
I don’t think that’s the way the song actually goes…. Let’s sing it the right way together!
Just a closer walk with Thee.
Grant it Jesus is my plea.
Daily walking close to Thee.
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be!
- Jesus is SAVIOR, but He is also LORD!
- You can’t have one without the other!
- You either have both, or neither!
Romans 6:1–7 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.
- Jesus expects us to come home!
- We are citizens of heaven!
- We have rights and privileges given to us by that fact.
- We also have responsibilities that are ours.
- Jesus is the “first fruits” of the resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:19–20 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
- We are waiting for our “Big Brother, Jesus,” to pick us up from our time at School!
- We will live in eternity with Him!
Conclusion:
- Jesus expects us to trust Him!
- Jesus expects me to grow to be more and more like Him. I cannot be “all talk.”
- Jesus expects me to be waiting for Him when He returns for us!
